The four, at a glance

What each standard measures, and where it earns its keep.

StandardWhat it measuresBest forWhere it's strongest
LEED
USGBC
Whole-building sustainability — energy, water, materials, indoor quality, and site. New builds, interiors, and existing operations seeking globally recognised certification. The most widely recognised mark worldwide; strong with international investors and tenants.
BREEAM
BRE
Whole-building sustainability with a lifecycle and management emphasis. Projects across the UK and Europe, and portfolios already reporting in BREEAM. Europe and the UK; a deep In-Use scheme for existing assets.
WELL
IWBI
Human health and wellbeing — air, water, light, comfort, movement, and mind. Offices and workplaces where occupant health and experience are the priority. Pairs with LEED or BREEAM; strong tenant, HR, and brand appeal.
EDGE
IFC
Resource efficiency — at least 20% less energy, water, and embodied energy in materials. Fast, cost-effective certification — residential, emerging markets, and large portfolios. Speed and affordability; an excellent first step into certification.

When to choose each

Choose LEED if…

You want the most globally recognised mark, you're courting international investors or tenants, or you need one consistent system across a multi-country portfolio.

Choose BREEAM if…

Your assets are UK- or Europe-based, your portfolio already reports in BREEAM, or you need a robust In-Use scheme for existing buildings.

Choose WELL if…

Occupant health and workplace experience are the goal — often alongside LEED or BREEAM, not instead of them.

Choose EDGE if…

You need certification that's fast, affordable, and focused on measurable resource savings — especially for residential, emerging markets, or large portfolios.
